i decided to get a little crafty saturday night, while mike was working at the hospital. i figured hearts were the appropriate theme for this month, and they turned out quite nice!!

we are going to celebrate the big day with an indian food date at aahar and maybe ice-skating on the canal!!

honestly, we aren't that crazy about valentine's. we love to celebrate love, but no need for a big commercial holiday with all its pressures and stress and money-making schemes. but i guess its always a good excuse for a date night!!

(i spy a sweet little cat!)

i spent saturday morning getting my natural color put back in my hair. we left the ends with the bleach, so its a nice little ombre, though its hard to tell from the picture. i loooove going to get my hair done. my husband is so generous and we saved our pennies because my roots were getting crazy!!

this week...

i slipped twice on the icy sidewalk.

once yesterday walking to the bus stop, and once pushing the babies in the carriage while talking to my father-in-law on the phone. i am really not cool. my knee is so bruised, and my pride, gone. of course, i tried to laugh when the little kid on his way to school asked me if i was ok (so sweet!!), but really, i was so embarrassed!!

mike survived his 2 overnight shifts and now has 5 days off!! what a champ!

i miss my friend heidi. here's a thoughtful and encouraging post from her blog.

i spied the best wedding photos i have ever seen. ever.

well, i'm off to have a little bowl of cereal and a cup of decaf, and curl up with 'the hobbit', and the husband.

i am so happy for you to meet one of my dearest friends, christina. we met so many years ago, and we shall be friends forever. and what this girl can do with words, i can't even begin to tell you...its lovely. i'll say it here and now, i think this girl will be published someday. at least i hope. because the world should have more access to this girl's brain and heart. and even more than her talent for writing, and the way she thinks, and that we share so many loves, i just love her for her. she is a wealth of wonder and imagination, and a faithful friend. so i am thrilled to share a bit of her with you today...enjoy!!

I'm up before the sky awakes, the clouds still huddled beneath the blanket sky.
Before I can organize my mind from jumbled sleep, daily tasks invade my thoughts.
Click, click, click ... rapidly they flow in, seizing my will and tugging on my "responsibility".
Like bees, the thoughts swarm in, attempting to stifle the stillness still available to me during those first sweet moments, before my morning dissolves into routine and the sound of motion arrives.

The wrestle to preserve the quiet.
Not only for ourselves and our own solitude.
But for others -- to be silent enough, within ourselves, to hear the voices of others.
To enter a conversation aware of the other person.

When I read --
Milton's epic poem, Paradise Lost , I witness the barriers of thought, the barriers of communication in Adam and Eve's language. And I learn how seductively language can be used against me as well.
Milton's work attunes my ears to pay attention, to recognize the subtleties of rhetoric.

Or Tolkien's tale of Bilbo Baggins, as he wields the sword of riddle and poetry to win a war of words over Gollum. Again, the art of conversation proved essential.

Or I read the great Psalms and unravel tangible light to uncover the dark path beneath my feet, reminding my heart to sing, to speak, to communicate with language, my heart to God.

To read is to practice listening, to sharpen my awareness of others' voices.
Even to learn to recognize my own voice, and the commonalities between us all.
We share so many hurts and insecurities, joys and delights,
and to recognize our shared experience with one another breeds encouragement, hope, and love.

... just one more reason to spend the weekend all cozy and curled up with a cup of tea and a good book.

(i don't know why i insist on calling it specifically cow milk? i just like to announce that its not from a nut and its so yummyyy!!)

the hubs is working some crazy 12-hour shifts at the hospital, which leaves me at home eating awesome dinners like this and blogging. the poor guy has 4 12-hour shifts in a row, 2 day shifts and 2 night shifts (booooo!!) then the lucky duck gets 5 days off!! pretty sweet! but those 4 days on are brutal!

my good, faithful, hard-working man.

i'm quite grateful britney gave me this opportunity to share my blog with you guys... which really is all about my heart. i am a wife, mommy & homemaker. i love my job! i don't feel like i can call it "my job", because although it wears me out & frustrates me beyond what i can handle at times... it is my joy!
i was thinking today about the word "homemaker" & that it's simply that... making a house a home. i love it! i love that i get to decorate it, fill it with music, words, imagination, wonder, learning, prayer & hopefully laughter over crying. ;) i get to make the barker house a home for my amazing husband & our 2 sweet boys +1 (& we have a baby on the way from Uganda, follow our journey here). i was also thinking today about how i cleanup messes & things just get messy again & really what is the point? there is purpose in the hours of cooking & then cleaning stacks of dirty dishes, in cleaning up messy boys & throwing their clothes in the hamper to be washed later, piles of laundry to be folded for hours on end, cleaning up trains that will just be pulled out tomorrow. & i have the joy of loving my family by serving them & making our home a refuge, a place of peace, where they feel like they can retreat.
what a high & beautiful calling it is to be a mommy, to train & disciple & show our children the grace of our Father. i feel so inadequate & failing at times, but praise God for His grace. i desire to be better at what i do & He is sanctifying me.

such a nice sunday. church in the am, and then just resting like true kings and queens, snuggling up in bed with books, munching on popcorn and sipping as much coffee as we want. reading 'the hobbit' now, and we had to laugh at how much we are like two little hobbits, just enjoying our little home, and quiet..."with the kettle just beginning to sing!". and i love when gandalf first comes to visit bilbo and invites him on an adventure (horrible idea to a hobbit) and tolkein says of bilbo that "he had only just had breakfast, but he thought a cake or two and a drink of something would do him good after his fright."

i'm thankful for good literature, and how it just wakes up something inside of you sometimes. something intangible and adventurous and nostalgic. i can't wait to have children and tell them stories all the time. i hope we are a singing and story-telling little family.

this weekend, i'm redecorating our bedroom. (on a $20 budget)

it needs a bit more romance. i want to use lots more pics of ussss on the walls. (like the ones above, and a couple others taken over the past year and a half of married life! i am terrible about never printing out pictures!!)

but anyway, i think i have been mostly inspired by this home. i want to make that pretty white garland.

just nothing happening around here.

so, not much blogging!

this week...

i was in bed before 8:30 for 3 days in a row. lame.

we had freezing rain and snow and rain and ice...and any other kind of wintry mix you can imagine, we probably had it. and sometimes all at once. january is almost over. spring is getting closer and closer.

i also realized how much i LOVE cow milk. for the past while, we have had nothing but homemade almond milk. and the last month or so, we've switched back to organic cow milk and i'm dyyyying over how good it is. as much as i really HATE to admit it, i L O V E that stuff. (of course, that's this week!)

i realized how much i think i need to have everything perfect. because when things aren't perfect (i.e. our budget not organized, the floors not cleaned, dishes not washed, and so many other silly things) i get suuuper anxious (which is a nice way of saying, i get stressed and scary) and if the lack of order is causing me to sin (which it is), then its probably (definitely) an idol in my heart. i need the gospel. everyday. i'm guilty everyday, and everyday, the good news is good news to me.

my husband cares for me so well.
sooo well.

speaking of the husband, he blogged this week.
i think he is genius. and quite charming. and witty.
(all things that i am not.)

i read the first 2 chapters of "charlotte's web" to the little girl i nanny (she is 4, and awesome!) and my heart was dyyying to be on a farm. it was weird. i usually prefer the city, but i was just dying for animals and sunshine and hanging my laundry out to dry and cooking biscuits in the morning and raising baby pigs.

these pictures of south africa made me want to jump on a plane right now. did you know that durban has the largest indian population (outside of india) in the entire world?? that little boyyyy!! indian babies are the cutest...just my opinion.

ps. and can i just say about 'little women', i always thought it was sad that laurie married amy instead of jo. but what a beautiful love!!! gosh, just perfect. i got so wrapped up reading of their falling in love. i think the movie just misses so much of that story. and the professor, i LOVE him. perfect for jo, eh? one of my very favorite books. i think it single-handedly pulled me out of my "harry potter is over" depression.

also, would it be weird if i made my children call me marmee? yeah, i think so. but maybe a sweet grandma name, huh??

my bus-ride home today was not near as exciting knowing i wouldn't see him when i got there.

i'm about to make some coffee (i know michael, i was only going to have 1 cup today, but i neeeeed some comfort!!), finish 'little women' (hoooly cow, so good!!), and snuggle with pipes. girl time.

date nights, and a bit on this winter.

date nights are so good and so needed, even before you have babies.

last night we wanted to go somewhere that there's no rush, and we could just sit with beer and just chat away for a few hours.

pubs are good for that.

i guess those chats can be had at home, but it's less likely to happen. there's internet, and to-do lists, and all sorts of distractions. (don't misunderstand, we definitely have our stay-in dates! we just have to be really purposeful about not turning on computers or pulling out books.) but it's nice to occassionally sit, with no interruptions, for hours, and just get it all out...all the weird things you think about all week that you forget to tell each other.

i just love it.

basically, i love to date my husband.

and this winter...holy cow.

maybe it's just as crazy as it was last year and i've just forgotten.

i feel like i live in narnia, people (the white witch's narnia that is)!! and it's incredible to watch how people just adapt. maybe i'm having a different experience this year because i'm working as a nanny rather than in a nice warm library. you can't just shut yourself indoors for 3-4 months. you have to bundle those babies up and get them out there. i'm learning all about snow plows and winter gear and carriages with plastic covers and the importance of the sidewalk plows when you have to push a carriage with 2 kids down snowy sidewalks. snow is pretty but gosh, it's not so nice when it gets on the inside of your scarf and then all over your hair so that it is soaked on the ends and matted down on top from your hat. and why i worry about what i wear under that winter coat, i have nooo idea, because all anyone ever sees are my pants from my knee to my mid-calf.

haha.

i actually feel it's quite the adventure. and i like it for now. but i won't be sad to see may and june.

piper's play-date

last friday night, matt & holly came to visit and they brought SESAME, piper's bff.

incredible.

ok, but seriously, we LOVE matt & holly.

(they got married this summer the day before our one year anniversary!!)

we are always so happy to get to spend time with them. they live in north bay, so it doesn't happen too often!

we had cupcakes (which husband and i had a little fight over; i'll spare you the details, only you should know i got a bag of cupcake mix thrown at me in the heat of our civil debate) and a wonderful chat. we miss them and we wish they would move back to ottawaaaa!!

we spent a happy new year's eve with friends in brooklyn.

we ate mexican food and had such a sweet time at karla's house (i just LOVE karla, and her whole family!!!), then back to the martin's to ring in the new year with dutch blitzzzz!! then to bed right after midnight, before i had time to get too depressed over how terrible i am at dutch blitz.

we realized as we were driving over the manhattan bridge into brooklyn that it was clear to the world where we were from. not only by our license plate, but by the massive amounts of snow still piled up on the back of our car. the only snowy car in the city.

texas, part 3

we had a fabulous time in mt. vernon with my mom and my paul and all my little chinese siblings!! we played so much wii (i beat mike 3x in wheel of fortune) and card games (which tate and i dominated), watched christmas movies, went to a xmas party and made gingerbread houses w/ viv, drank tons of hot chocolate, and got completely spoiled!! it was so good to see max & viv and get to know tate & elliott a little better, since they have only become part of our family since i've been married and moved a million miles north to canada. it was a wonderful visit.

today was crazyyyy. we went out to get groceries and came home to find we were locked out!! our lock messed up and we had to get a completely new door knob. good thing that yesterday zac preached about God's sovereignty in every little part of our lives, even the small trials that frustrate our little day-to-day plans. we were remembering that word this afternoon. :)

my dad and peggy collect miniature donkeys. and they collect and sell antiques once a month at a flea market in canton, tx. (which i believe is the largest outdoor flea market in the world)

i think they have the cutest hobbies.

our friday was quite cozy, even though we were among boxes and little messes.

and as i was sitting with mike, eating our noodles (for the 18th time this week because we aren't buying more groceries because we leave for texas next week!!), i couldn't help but just be so thankful. i love being married. but i love it because i love mike. there's no one else i would want to share these humble little meals with. no one on earth. if i had to eat noodles every day, i would be happy, as long as i can share my noodles with him.

and so for all the days we are graciously given together, i'm thankful.

we have been so busy because we are now moving next week!! we found the sweetest little apartment this weekend in westboro (in ottawa) and we get to move in earlier than we were planning.

we jumped up and down (well, i jumped up and down while hugging michael, so i guess that's 'we'...) when it was all official.

we cooked all day and invited friends over for the evening and listened to christmas records and had a grand time. mike loves to celebrate american thanksgiving, and i'm glad. he did live in the states for a few thanksgivings, so he knows its wonderful.

we found lots of good used books yesterday. we hit jackpot on pg wodehouse and 2 harry potter books in the edition i'm collecting. for sooo cheap.

i feel like i could be with michael 24 hours/day, 7 days/week and never tire of that man.

thanksgiving on thursday and of course, we are planning a feast.

this is the sweetest story. i don't even have words.

WE JUST BOUGHT TICKETS TO TEXAS FOR CHRISTMAS!!!!

well, for before christmas. we are coming back on the 21st for christmas in canada. (and it better be white!) but we didn't think we were going to make it to texas at allllll this year. but we found some cheap ones and snagged 'em! so THRILLED to see my familyyyy. (and eat chick-fil-a)

funny story:

my mom didn't know we were even looking for tickets. so i texted her to tell her to call me because i had BIG NEWS. she couldn't get skype pulled up on her phone for some reason (she was at old navy) and she was dyyying to know what i needed to tell her. after i told her (which she was suuuper excited) she said "well i just told the cashier at old navy 'oh my gosh i think i'm going to be a grandmother!!!"'

ahhh, such disappointment. one day kimi, one day.

soooo, this means the next few weeks for us (and actually the month of december) is going to be crazy-busy. before we leave on the 15th we have to pack up our entire apartment because we are MOVING (that's right!!) on the 22nd or 23rd. then christmas with our family here in ottawa, then we are leaving maybe the 26th or 27th to visit city church in brooklyn for the first sunday in the new building on jan. 1! (yessss!!)

then i'm back in ottawa for work starting jan. 3rd.

not that you all needed (or wanted) to know all that, but there you have it.

AWKWARD ALL AROUND.

piper is hopelessly awkward on her little leash.

she won't straighten her legs and walk. she scrunches up and walks with her belly dragging the ground. i think its because of her leash. she kind of did the same thing when she was wearing her pumpkin costume. i guess anything on her back makes her weird.

and kind of funny.

last saturday morning was so sweet.

like christmas morning sweet.

we slept in and husband made me home-made hash-browns and coffee while i played on pinterest.

then we sat and played on pinterest together (ok, he sat and watched me play on pinterest). and chatted. and ate hash-browns with coffee.

and somehow (miraculously) we went from pinterest to a douglas wilson sermon clip.

(at this point we discussed naming our first-born son douglas wilson chhangur.)

and then we listened again, while i washed dishes.

so happy to have my dear husband, to be able to listen to faithful teachers online, to sleep in and eat hash-browns.

we had our friend darlene over last night for pitas and falafel.

let me tell you, falafel is so YUM.

not so easy to make, however.

i got suuuper frustrated trying to work a tiny food processor with all those little chickpeas and potato and then trying to mix all the spices in. aye yay yay. i kicked off my slipper in protest at one point. not cute.

looking back...i was perhaps, being a bit dramatic. (or alot dramatic) it was a pretty dramatic day altogether in my little brain. at the time i swore it was my last try at these things (my first, and my last).

but they were so good.

so today (being not-so-dramatic), falafel is the new us.

hot coffee doesn't even sound appealing to me anymore.

i prepare it every night.

(course-ground coffee+water+brown sugar+cinnamon, in a pitcher, in the fridge)

and put it in the french press in the morning.

then back into the pitcher and so i have it on-hand all day.
i even bring it to work in a little jar with a lid.

just add half & half.

and its soooo good.

i made these a few years ago, for my first kindergarten class.

(gosh, i miss that class. can you believe they are in 3rd grade now?!)

anyway...

its the easiest baking you will ever do.

and super yummy.

just mix these:

don't add the egg, or the oil. just the pumpkin.

(about 15oz. my can was big, so i didn't add the whole can.)

bake them at 350 for about 25 minutes.

so easy.

so good.

i brought them for our family's thanksgiving dinner on sunday.

with my mom's broccoli salad.

i love holiday cooking.

cream of carrot soup with coconut

in a large pot, bring 3 carrots, one sweet potato, and an onion to simmer in 3.5 cups of vegetable broth.
(all the veggies should be chopped)
add 3 cloves of garlic and 2 teaspoons fresh ginger, minced. (ohhhh, ginger!!!)
cover and heat for 20ish minutes, or until everything is soft.

blend it.
in a blender.
then put it back in the pot.

over a very low heat, stir in 1 can of coconut milk and 1 teaspoon of salt.
heat for 3-4 minutes.

garnish with cinnamon, and we eat it with naan bread.
(because we are indian over here and we love any excuse for some naan bread.)

ohhhh friends, ginger & coconut milk, they were made for each other!
and the soup is completely vegan.
(because we like to be vegan sometimes. because sometimes we like chicken wings.)
and again, its from this recipe book. its the book i use most. i recommend it.

we had poutine at elgin st. diner.

then we (me, my mom, and my mom-in-law.) did some shopping on rideau st. while mike got coffee and did some reading. (of course.) then we met up at the market for beaver-tails!!!

then we happened to run into mike's uncle bob and aunt shirley.

let me tell you, they are the sweeeetest pair.

aren't they just the cutest couple you have ever seen?! i just wish they lived right beside us!! they were visiting ottawa from lakefield.

had some rest-time in bob & shirley's hotel room, since it was right downtown.

(the moms needed some rest!)

so i got a little alone walk with my man.

and the best part of the day...

our mom's came with us to watch UFC!!!!

BELIEVE IT PEOPLE.

and kimi loved it.

i loved spending time with ladies from my church.

and it was soooo SO cold, but its so good to "rough it" every once in a while.

we had such a nice dinner date at saffron.

its super fancy (not necessarily our thing) but the food is sososo good!

ok, i know its weird.

i'm not a parent. i'm not about to be a parent.

but someday, God-willing, i will be.

and i'm reading a book on it now.

and honestly, it is BLOWING MY MIND.

if you are a mom or dad, or ever want to be a mom or dad, or if you are a believer serving alongside moms and dads in you church, i recommend this book.

it's blessing me, not even as a parent (or someday-parent) but as a human.

here is a quote (a long quote) from the introduction:

"Christian children (and their parents) don't need to learn to be 'nice'. They need death and resurrection and a Savior who has gone before them as a faithful high priest, who was a child himself, and who lived and died perfectly in their place. They need a Savior who extends the offer of complete forgiveness, total righteousness, and indissoluble adoption to all who will believe. This is the message we all need. We need the gospel of grace and the grace of the gospel. Children can't use the law any more than we can, because they will respond to it the same way we do. They'll ignore it or bend it or obey it outwardly for selfish purposes, but this one thing is certain: they won't obey it from the heart, because they can't. That's why Jesus had to die."

and again:

"We've transformed the holy, terrifying, magnificent, and loving God of the Bible into Santa and his elves. And instead of transmitting the gloriously liberating and life-changing truths of the gospel, we have taught our children that what God wants from them is morality. We have told them that being good (at least outwardly) is the be-all and end-all of their faith. This isn't the gospel; we're not handing down Christianity. and let me tell you, as she breaks this down though the chapters, (because you are probably asking soo many questions) its just INCREDIBLE how beautiful the gospel is, and how often we turn to moralism, in our own lives, but especially in parenting because we want to make "good" kids.

its completely counter-intuitive, but isn't the good news just that?!

seriously, i could quote all day.

its so good.

when i do have kids, i'll probably reread it constantly.

the most exciting night of our week was when mike bought me an apple cinnamon donut from tim's and i framed our map of new york subways and hung old pictures on the wall.

(michael bought the map on our first trip to brooklyn, when we were dating.)

and that's just how boring and ordinary and wonderful our week has been.

(with some not-so-wonderful, super-stressful moments mixed in.)

5. ~~make cookies for my dear husband once a week. because i know it really blesses him. :)~~

i know its just 5 things. but i'll feel really glad if i accomplish all 5 before october.

my mom sent us little birthday gifts (early) from texas.

#1. saltwater sandals!! now i match viv (my 7-year-old sister) who has blue ones!

#2. moisturizer that i loooove that i can't find in canada.

(it works so good!! i really wanted it a couple months back when my skin was breaking out terriblyyy.)

#3. make-up.

(i also can't seem to find this in canada.)

also in the package was a book, but michael stole it and it didn't get pictured, which is probably what he is checking out in the background.

i cried this morning when i thought of him all grown up, with his backpack and his sweet soft heart, headed into that elementary school.

i had to text my mom this morning to check on him (and her).

today we spent at a private beach (belongs to our very sweet and generous neighbors) and now we are making pizza and salad and having red wine and welcoming the weekend!!!
